Production and Distribution team I would like to use

For our opening title sequence the production team we would like to use is Screen Gems. I have chosen to use this team because they produced the inspiration for our opening sequence: The Roommate. They would be familiar with the plot and aspects of our sequence.

In terms of a distribution company I would also like to use Screen Gems because they also distributed the film The Roommate.

What I would classify my opening title sequence.

I would give my opening title sequence a classification of 15. This is because there would be alcohol and violence. Also the language used may be a bit crude. In addition the content in it may be something that might be frightful to younger viewers. The 15 classification also suits our target audience because it is the start age for our demographics.

Kind of loving (inspiration for opening credits)

This is the opening title sequence for 60s film Kind of loving. although it is not the same genre as my opening sequence, i wanted to see if i could get some inspiration from the way they showed their credits in the 60s.

I wasn't very taken by the way the credits were shown, i didn't expect a lot but i though there could be some ideas i could use. However i do like the use of the sound bridge that occurred with the wedding bells. It is a good way to get the audience wondering.

I do have some criticisms to make about the way the credits were shown. For example when the title of the film was shown it was white, in front of a white dress, so the title couldn't really be seen. I know the colour can not be changed due to the lack of development in technology, but it could have been placed at a different  place.

My final film synopsis

With my group we decided that our final synopsis will be about 17 year old Janet is a quite lonely girl who doesn't have many friends or personal life. She's use yo being by herself and not needing to impress anyone. However when new girl Claire comes along and pays Janet a bit too much attention it becomes a strange feeling.

Claire has payed a peculiar interest to Janet and wants her to always be by her side. Claire's fascination for Janet isn't sexual but an obsession of her personality. They go out to a party and when Janet doesn't want to play along to her rules Claire isn't happy about it. Prier to this Janet had found multiple pictures of herself in Claire's bag; and she had started to have doubts about their friendship.

Claire decides she's had enough of Janet's behavior so she spikes her drink. Janet drinks it and wonders into the road, where she drops and dies.

Now innocent, quite, Janet is dead and there's no trace of Claire.

My Film Synopsis Idea

There is a multi millionaire Herbert Marshall, he is owner of Marshall Bank. Following his scandalous behaviour he has a lot of enemies and he doesn't have any emotion for anything. However after the death of his worth during child birth his only weakness is his daughter. With all his money and power his daughter is the one thing that makes him feel anything. Marshall lives in his sorrows but due to his tough exterior he doesn't let anyone take advantage of him.

On an average day Marshall and his daughter Elizabeth (after her mother) go to a branch of their bank to sort out some business. Elizabeth over protected by her father, is always heavily protected and by her father's side. Being home schooled she doesn't really have a reality of the outside world and the kind of harm that lurks around. As the meeting continues a loud explosion is heard. There has been a break in into the bank.

However it is not for a bank robbery but for Marshall's daughter. Not knowing this security are trying to take Marshall and his daughter away from the scene, when they approached by a masked man. Security try to fight him off but his method is planned and they have no chance against him.

Marshall's daughter is taken and he has to go through a lot of measures and go against all his beliefs to get her back.

Preliminary Task

This video show the Preliminary task that we were asked to complete at the start of the course. The aim of this task was to create a short film which consisted of a shot reverse shot, the 180 degree rule, match on action and a person walking through a door then having a conversation with another person. This task was also used to introduce us to editing and the different techniques. We used Final Cut Express to edit this piece of work.

This film is about a girl (me) who was going in for a job interview but didn't have the right approach towards it and was rejected the job. I think that the things that went well were the filming because we managed to get good camera angles, the editing because the film flowed and seemed natural. We followed the 180 degree rule and i think we showed the shot reverse shot well. I think that our sound track was also good and went with the scene.

Difficulties I faced whiles making the preliminary task was that it was difficult for my group to meet at the same time to film and edit. Also our set wasn't available for us at all times. Furthermore when we didn't film certain things properly the actors had to look exactly the same as they did in the previous filming, which wasn't always easy. Also I found editing a bit difficult because i couldn't remember the shortcuts used.

Things that could have been improved in this task was that it could have included more effects and adjusted the lighting in the opening scene.

Overall i really enjoyed doing this task and it really helped me master the editing techniques.

Codes and Conventions of Thriller Genre

180 degree, shot reverse shot and match on action rule

We were asked to create a preliminary task as part of our coursework that included; a scene of a person walking through a door and having a conversation with another person. In this we had to add:

The 180 degree rule

Which is consists of an imaginary line called the axis, which connects the characters  by keeping the camera on one side of this axis for every shot in the scene. The first character will always be frame right of the second character, who is then always frame left of the first

Shot Reverse Shot

The camera has a mid shot of one character and we a shown the back of another. Then the camera reverses to the another character and we are shown a mid shot of them. This makes it seem as though they are having a conversation.

Match On Action

Match on action is an editing technique for continuity editing in which one shot cuts to another shot portraying the action of the subject in the first shot.

Previous AS Media title sequences

This is a thriller opening title sequence. I have chosen it because there genre of my title sequence is also thriller, so it could give me an idea of the kind of things i could have in mine.

What they have done well

I like the way the opening credits were shown at the beginning and how the name of the college emerged into the production name. I thought was a creative way to do it. Another thing that went well was the sound track used, because it suits the thriller genre and lets the audience feel like something is about to happen. I also like the non-diegetic sound of the camera shots, it creates a mystery to the audience as to who is taking those pictures. In addition the diegetic sound of the character's heavy breathing sets the mood of the thriller by showing the fear that the character is experiencing. I thought that the match on action was done very well and blended smoothly.

What could have been improved

I think the font used for the title could have been improved because it didn't really show the mood if the film, it was just plain. In addition the face of the villain was shown so the mystery of who killed the victim is gone.

What can i try to do to be successful

To be successful i would use a good soundtrack which shows my thriller genre and i would use low key lighting to create tension and mystery. I would also show my opening credits in a creative way.

What i would avoid

I would avoid showing the face of the villain  so that the audience is left in suspense. I would also avoid using font that doesn't show the thriller genre.

The genre for this title sequence is Action. I chose it because i think it is a difficult genre to do and i would like to see the way they showed it.

What they have done well

I like the high key lighting used it shows the intensity of the film. I also like the way the production name was shown it had a unique way to it.

What could have been improved

I think the camera work could have been improved, it looked like the camera was hand held. The editing could also have been improved, the shots just kept cutting which didn't show continuity. We could also hear background sounds in the scene, which didn't let the sequence look very professional. There wasn't a variety of editing techniques and camera shots used.

What can i try to do to be successful

I could try and use a range of camera angles and editing techniques.

What i would avoid

I would avoid including background noises in the title sequence and not making the narrative too obvious.

The Genre for this opening title sequence is a romantic comedy. I chose it because it was different from the ones i have seen.

What they have done well

I like the fact that an animation was used instead of characters, it makes it different from the rest. I also like the idea of incorporating the ring into the title, it really shows the romantic genre. The font used also suits the genre and target audience. The colours a in addition connote happiness and love. I thought that the sound track also emphasized the Rom-com genre.

What they could have improved

The length of the title sequence was too short, it didn't give the audience time to absorb what the film might be about. Also no production name was included so it didn't give it that professional aspect.

What can i try to do to be successful

To include a production name and who did certain roles in the sequence, i.e. camera man etc. Also include aspects that would appeal to my target audience.

What i would avoid

I would avoid making my opening title sequence too short because it doesn't give the audience a chance to learn what the film could be about.

SE7EN Analysis codes and conventions

Analysis of Codes and Conventions on Se7en

The opening sequence of the thriller SE7EN consists of a variety of technical, verbal and symbolic codes and conventions. In this essay I will be analysing the codes and conventions and what they connote to the audience.

Codes

Editing is used as a technical code in the title sequence. During the title sequence we see a lot of fast paced shots. This could connote that not a lot wants to be given away to the audience. The fast paces mean that the audience don’t have long enough to look at the shots and take it in. Therefore they would go into the film oblivious of what would go on.
The fast paced shots could also foreshadow the rapidity of the film and how fast everything would take place.

Messy handwriting is also used as a verbal code. The names of the actors, directors etc are shown in scribbled untidy writing. This could connote someone being impatient, (like the villain). The messiness in addition could connote how chaotic the movie would be. Another verbal code used was when text about a pregnant woman was highlighted. This connotes themes of sexuality and also conforms to the stereotype that men dominate women, because in the opening sequence the hand that is shown belongs to a male figure; that then highlights a vulnerable female as him victim.

The colour red is used as a symbolic code. We see pictures of people put into red ink. This connotes the bloodshed by people, anger of the villain or even death. On the other hand the colour red could also connote the love that some of the characters could have for each other.

Conventions

A filter is used as a technical genre convention. There is limited colour throughout the sequence. The colour was dull and earthy which connotes the feeling of sadness and sorrow. It could also connote some being buried because of the earthy colours. The filter is used in thriller genres to show that not everything is clear and there is always mystery. In addition the protagonist is not shown in the sequence; this is done to give the audience an element of surprise. It connotes secrecy and tension.

Diegetic sound is used as a verbal convention. There was a scream in the background of the opening sequence. Screams are typically used in thrillers to show the fear and vulnerability of the victim. The scream connotes all the tension built up in the victim and villain that they want to release. The scream also connotes the dread of the victim.

In the opening sequence the symbolic convention was the removal of evidence. The protagonist uses a razor blade to remove his fingerprints. The removal of evidence is common in the thriller genre because it shows criminality. Using a blade to remove his fingerprints connotes danger and carelessness. On the other hand it also shows that the villain is dedicated to his work because he is going to extremes to make sure he is not interrupted.
